The catalog number AP-9009 is the most powerful identifying mark for this release. The "AP" prefix is the Apple designation in the Toshiba system. The number AP-9009 itself clearly indicates a Japanese release, while the British YEX appears only as matrix numbers in parentheses on the label.
Additionally, note the rim text "Mfd. by Toshiba Musical Industries Ltd. Japan" and "Made in Japan" on the back cover, which constitute two additional independent confirmations of the country of production. The former is located at the bottom of the label's rim, the latter under the Japanese characters at the bottom of the back cover.
The earliest Japanese pressings of Let It Be were released on red vinyl, later ones on black. This is a dating feature within the Japanese release: the red disc places the copy in an early batch.
Historical context & other notes
The Japanese release of Let It Be was released on June 5, 1970, under the number AP-9009. Initially, it was a box set exclusively with red vinyl, making it one of the rarest of all pressings of the album. Some boxes contained a black vinyl; this was later pressed as a standard album without the box and book.
The red vinyls reportedly offered particularly good sound quality and are significantly rarer than the black ones. A complete red box set with an OBI strip can fetch up to 750 GBP, with the strip alone adding 30 percent or more to the value of the entire set. This pressing is particularly sought after by audiophiles.
