The Legend of Locomotiv GT

For many international rock fans, Hungarian music begins and ends with Omega’s „Gyöngyhajú lány”. However, for the connoisseurs of 70s progressive rock, funk, and blues, there is only one king: Locomotiv GT (LGT). Founded in 1971, LGT was Hungary’s first true supergroup. They didn’t just want to be stars in Budapest; they had their eyes on the world. Their sound was a sophisticated blend of hard rock, jazz fusion, and soulful melodies.

As Gábor Presser, the band’s mastermind, noted about their internal chemistry: „We agreed on musical tastes 90% of the time, but we could argue brilliantly about the remaining 10%… it was a test of endurance being away from home for 50 days at a time.” — Source: Presser Gábor interview, Blikk.hu.

LGT was one of the few Eastern Bloc bands that gained real traction in the West. In 1972, they performed at the Great Western Express Festival in Lincoln, England, alongside giants like Genesis and Joe Cocker. They even recorded an English-language album in London and later in the US for ABC Records.

Collector’s Corner: The Rare Gems

Locomotiv GT (1974, ABC Records / Epic): The US and UK releases are highly prized. While the Hungarian originals are easier to find, these Western pressings represent a unique moment when „Iron Curtain rock” almost broke the global charts.

Motor City Rock (1976): Recorded in Prague and exported across the Eastern Bloc. Its industrial-tinged rock sound is a favorite among European collectors.

The „Pink” Album (Locomotiv GT V, 1976): A double album that is considered the „White Album” of Hungarian rock.
