“Kashmir” is one of Led Zeppelin’s most epic songs, released in 1975 on the album *Physical Graffiti*. It took a long time to write, with work done in several different locations, and contrary to its title… it has nothing to do with the actual region of Kashmir. The idea was conceived by Jimmy Page during a road trip through the Saharan region of Morocco. The song blends elements of hard rock, progressive rock, and music inspired by the cultures of the Middle East and the Northwest, giving it a distinctive, monumental sound.
“Kashmir” has been performed on nearly every tour since its release and is considered by the musicians themselves and fans alike to be one of Led Zeppelin’s most important compositions.
“I’d like us to be remembered more for ‘Kashmir’ than for ‘Stairway to Heaven.’ It’s so spot-on; there’s nothing exaggerated about it, no vocal hysteria—it’s perfect Led Zeppelin.”
— Robert Plant
