We Will Rock You

In the documentary *Days of Our Lives*, guitarist Brian May recalled a concert during which the crowd chanted the Liverpool Football Club anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

“I went to bed thinking, ‘What could I ask them to do?’ They’re all crammed in there, but they can clap their hands, stomp their feet, and sing,” he noted. “In the morning, I woke up with the idea for ‘We Will Rock You.’”

Thus was born the “stomp-stomp-clap” rhythm, recorded by the band members multiple times to give it monumental power. The minimalist form and dynamic interplay between the percussive pulse and Freddie Mercury’s vocals made the song not only a hit but also a ritual of collective energy.
