One of Led Zeppelin’s most beloved, well-known, and commercially successful songs, widely regarded as one of the greatest rock songs of all time. The song was written by band members Jimmy Page and Robert Plant.
– “[This song] crystallized the essence of the band. It had everything and showed us at our best. It was a milestone. Every musician wants to create something of lasting quality, something that will endure. We succeeded in doing that with ‘Stairway,’” Jimmy Page said of the song.
In 1994, the song was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and included on the list of “500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.” In 1999, the song ranked No. 1 on Classic Rock magazine’s list of “The 10 Greatest Songs of All Time,” and in 2008, Rolling Stone magazine placed it at No. 8 on its list of “The 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time.”
Page began writing the music for the song in May 1970, and Plant wrote 80% of the lyrics a few weeks later. The song was recorded in London at Island Studios, where recording began in December 1970 and wrapped up a month later. The song is perhaps best known for its famous guitar riff, which has become something of a trademark for the band.
– I tried different things at home, combining this part with that one. I had an idea for the verses, a transition to the solo, and the final section. It was an idea for something that would build and build. I didn’t have any lyrics from Robert, just a melody that tied in with the guitar parts I had. […] Originally, I had a different guitar part for the ending. It was like the beginning, a little different. But I never added it,” Page said about the song’s creation.
