This is one of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s most popular songs and the third most-played track on Spotify, after “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird.” It’s a ballad about a mother’s words of advice to her son, urging him to be a simple man who lives honestly, with love and compassion. “Simple Man” is a sort of anthem for those who value family values and life wisdom above all else. It’s simply a beautiful song with a beautiful message. The guitar solo in this song is performed by Gary Rossington, who was a member of the band for 59 years since its founding and performed in concerts until his death in March 2023.
