“Shine On You Crazy Diamond” is a nine-part composition written by David Gilmour, Roger Waters, and Rick Wright. It appeared on the 1975 album *Wish You Were Here*. The song was conceived and written as a tribute and memorial to former band member Syd Barrett, one of the founders of Pink Floyd, who was removed from the band by the other members in 1968 due to drug use and (partly related) mental health issues that affected his ability to integrate with the rest of the band and perform live. He was replaced by David Gilmour, a former school friend of Barrett’s, who was initially hired as a second guitarist.
