Why this pressing matters
This release is notorious for its controversial original cover photograph, known as the "Butcher Cover". The initial response to the cover was so negative that Capitol recalled all 750,000 manufactured copies from its distributors for repackaging with a more conventional photograph.
The album was produced at three Capitol Records pressing plants: in Los Angeles, California, Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Jacksonville, Illinois. According to Yoko Ono, the Jacksonville plant simply printed new covers and destroyed all copies of the "Butcher Cover," while the other two plants came up with a cheaper solution (printing just new front slicks and glue them over the original artwork), creating so called "Trunk Cover" version, which was then released to stores. Some buyers never realized their covers were double-layered.
The notoriety and scarcity of the Butcher cover has made it one of the most expensive and sought-after Beatles releases. A first state Butcher cover (without the actual record) previously owned and autographed by Ringo Starr was sold at an auction in 2015 for $25,600.
There are of course also editions in circulation with a completely changed cover without the "Butcher Cover" underneath.
Historical context & other notes
Compilation album originally released in the US & Canada by Capitol Records in 1966. It included the songs that were removed from the North American release of other Beatles albums.
“Act Naturally” and “Yesterday” were removed from the American release of Help.
“Drive My Car,” “If I Needed Someone,” “Nowhere Man,” and “What Goes On” were left off of the American release of Rubber Soul.
“And Your Bird Can Sing,” “Doctor Robert,” and “I’m Only Sleeping” were taken from the not-yet-released album, Revolver.
The last two song, “Day Tripper” and “We Can Work It Out”, had been previously released together as a single.
