How to authenticate this pressing
Specific verification cues for this exact variant.
The first pressing can be identified by its cover, which collectors refer to as the "old man" cover (a portrait of the British statesman in a Beatles wig). This version is subtitled "Jolly What!" and was released in mono and stereo with three different label styles: black with a colored stripe and oval logo; with a colored stripe and a label in parentheses; and an all-black label with silver printing.
Counterfeits of this album first appeared in the late 1970s and are easily recognizable by the lack of lettering on the spine of the cover and a black background instead of the navy blue or purple of the originals.
Historical context & other notes
The second pressing of the The Beatles & Frank Ifield On Stage is one of the rarest and most valuable of all Beatles albums ever issued. It was also the last album manufactured by Vee Jay Records, before their rights to the Beatles were to expire on Oct. 10, 1964.
Originally the album was released on February 26, 1964, 46 days after Meet The Beatles and copies of that original release can be found today. Few months later label decided to redesign the cover and came up with one commonly referred to as the "portrait" cover. However for the unknown reasons this re-issue version hardly made it to record stores, and apparently only less than 100 copies are believed to have been manufactured.
