Historical context & other notes
The album hit the top of the charts in Germany, New Zealand, Sweden, and a few other international markets, while peaking only at number 11 in US. Some critics felt it was a slightly rushed, conservative sequel to their debut. However, fans and retrospective reviews have frequently praised the album's tighter production, refined musicianship, and sophisticated melodies. Communiqué is also a notable milestone in the band's history as it was the last Dire Straits album to feature guitarist David Knopfler, who departed due to creative differences prior to their third album, Making Movies.
