In January 1983, Dire Straits released a special „dance” mini-album on vinyl, which remains the envy of CD fans to this day, as it has never been released digitally. It includes the track „If I Had You,” available exclusively on this release.
Although it’s commonly believed that the material for this EP was recorded in a single day, the musicians actually worked in the studio from October 1-3, 1982. This was also the first session for which drummer Terry Williams joined the group. Three songs were recorded, none of which were later included on the regular album:
„Twisting by the Pool” 3:28 (this song reappeared on the 1988 compilation Money For Nothing).
„Two Young Lovers” 3:22 (a live version of the track released on the live album Alchemy).
„If I Had You” 4:16 (an otherwise unreleased track).
For the American market, the material was supplemented with the song „Badges, Posters, Stickers, T-Shirts” (4:54), recorded in the spring of 1982. This song was originally intended for the Love over Gold album but was omitted at the last minute.
The ExtendeDancEPlay EP (although released under the title Twisting by the Pool in some countries) was released in two versions: one as a 7-inch single at 33 1/3 RPM, and the other as a maxi single on a 12-inch record at 45 RPM.
Issued with labels embossed on the disc, strikingly similar to the Polish ones (Tonpress did this for us), the small disc had several variants. My copy has the matrix numbers on side A: DSTR 2 A ▽ 2 420 U 1 1 4 3 , and on side B: DSTR 2 B 2 420 U 13 1 ƱTOPIA. Some variants have the scratched-out inscription ƱTOPIA on both sides. There was also a reprint with paper labels.
