Thin Lizzy’s version of “Whiskey in the Jar” is a rock arrangement of a traditional Irish folk song that tells the story of a bandit betrayed by a woman. Released in 1972, it became one of their most popular songs, topping the charts in Ireland and gaining significant recognition in the UK. Philip Lynott’s vocals and Eric Bell’s solo are stunning. An excellent track.
Interestingly, “Whiskey in the Jar” did not appear on Thin Lizzy’s first original studio albums released between 1971 and 1973, even though the single was released before their third album, *Vagabonds of the Western World*. It first appeared on an album only on a compilation, such as the 1976 release Remembering – Part 1, as well as on later reissues and compilations.
Additionally, the song appeared as a bonus track on CDs in reissues of classic albums, such as Vagabonds of the Western World and Shades of a Blue Orphanage, in releases from the 1990s and 2000s.
